Instead of distilling biblical wisdom down to an easily-digestible statement believers can throw around whenever their views are attacked, simplicisms actually stem one’s ability to ponder deep themes and topics effectively. Growing up in a legalistic Christian church, the author grappled with issues of belief due to something he identified later as an enforced “simplicism.” This term refers to the representation of truth as nothing more than a few words strung together, an overly simplified statement of belief that Christians must adhere to unquestioningly. ![]()

![]() In this trilogy, the author calls for a revolution in our hearts and minds–think The Matrix. Westerfeld's themes include vanity, environmental conservation, Utopian idealism, fascism, violence, and love. Readers who enjoyed Uglies and Pretties (both S & S, 2005) will not want to miss Specials, but those who have not read those books will not understand much of what is happening. As in the first two books, much of the story takes place with characters whizzing through the air on hoverboards, but Tally and her friends are in for some harsh realities here. In Specials, she has become an elite fighting machine, fully enhanced with nanotechnology and super-fast reflexes, and made to work as a Special Circumstances agent for the nameless city that she fled. ![]() Tally Youngblood, the 16-year-old protagonist, learns in the first two books that free will and truth are more important than a false sense of security. ![]() ![]() Set some time in the future, after a human-made bacteria destroyed the modern world, the trilogy tells of new cities established and tightly controlled through brainwashing and a series of operations leading to a compliant society. Grade 8 Up–This final installment in the series is a warning of the dangers of overconsumption and conformity. ![]() ![]() ![]() The transformation of the two characters between their school selves and home selves is really well done so that tracking them between both scenes is pretty easy. I appreciated Hori's various hairstyles, which is not something you often see with manga (it can make it difficult to keep track of characters). Hagiwara's art and character design is very detailed. The story is also a nice affirmation for their friendship that lets you be your true self. The dress code at my school is pretty strict, so students are constantly having to take out piercings or cover tattoos while on campus, and I'm sure those studs go right back in their ears/noses/eyebrows when they leave for the day. He doesn't want people to get the wrong impression of him because of his tattoos, but to him, they are works of art, not a sign of being "hardcore". ![]() I appreciate Miyamura's side of things as well. This was a very cute story that, I think, a lot of my students would relate to because they have very different sides of themselves when they go home, particularly with how many of my students become the caretaker for younger siblings when they leave school. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cooper immerses us in Dennis's conflicting thoughts, which he articulates with frightening lucidity. When Julian accidentally knocks the youth's head against a table, the incident triggers in Dennis an ongoing obsession-the perverse imagining of murdering anonymous lovers after sex. One of their partners is a drugged-up young man who turns out to be the model in faked snuff photos Dennis discovered as a teen. In the '70s, Dennis and his lover, Julian, engage in three-way sexual encounters with strangers. Cooper traces key episodes in Dennis's life over two decades, following his interest in gay pornography. The narrator of this study in brutal sexuality and psychosis is an emotionally detached, intelligent man named Dennis. Cooper has produced edgy works of fiction ( Safe Closer ), but this novel is his most disturbing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether or not the premise of the novel is exaggerated is left up to the reader, however it would not to unreasonable to say that the average reader would believe it - criticism often applied to 'The Da Vinci Code' despite the fact they are fictional pieces. The conspiracy in this case is one on government level, where a top-secret supercomputer under the control of the NSA is used to break any encryption in a matter of hours and minutes - even encryption that is considered to have to take years to break. It does share some attributes with Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code' - they both shed some light on different conspiracies, explaining the history and background of these conspiracies in a way that makes it easy for the average reader to grasp the magnitude of them. ![]() Those who pick it up expecting something like ' The Da Vinci Code' or ' Angels and Demons' are sure to be disappointed - this novel concerns technology rather than fiction, being more similar to his novel ' Deception Point.' Its genre is "techno- thriller", and its story concerns a top-secret National Security Agency (NSA) code-breaker supercomputer and the staff that operate and monitor it. ![]() Dan Brown's ' Digital Fortress' was first published in 1996. ![]() ![]() ![]() According to Newtons law about energy conservation states that the total.
